Coaches Corner #7

Great job in the scrimmage today for all the athletes! I appreciated that everyone played hard and used the skills learned at practice on the pitch in game situations. I am also grateful that everyone tried their best in the positions that I assigned– it gave the coaching staff an opportunity to see how match ups worked and provided insights into the strengthens and weaknesses of different athlete combinations.

The first scrimmage was an 8-0 victory with Josh scoring 4 goals (a double brace) and having 3 assists. Hunter had 3 goals (a hat trick) and two assists, Joseph had two assists and Tyler had his first goal of the new season. Matt was our first yellow card (he's a beast) and had some great positioning and provided needed leadership on the pitch when he was at the center position. Jess held her position well, defended well and put some great balls into play for her teammates.

The second scrimmage was another shut out game, 5-0 in favor of the Flames. Tyler had three goals (a hat trick), Josh had two goals (a brace), Hunter had two assists and Joseph had one assist. Jess and Matt were again fierce defenders, helping preserve the shut outs. Both were penalty free in the second match. Tyler's active style of play led him to be the player on the Flames that was involved in every two on one penalty and the sole three in the box penalty assessed against the Flames.

I hope that each of the athletes is able to celebrate their team and individual victories. In the next couple of practices we will build on the skills applied in the scrimmages to develop our abilities even further. I heard some really good communication out there and saw some great passing and teamwork. For future games the pace will be a lot faster. Many of the teams that we will play will have Strike Force chairs and be quicker and more agile. That means that we need to pick up our pace, talk to our teammates and work to enhance our ability to pass and shoot.

I am very proud of you all, it is an honor to coach such a talented and dedicated group of athletes. I look forward to practice on October 26th. Be ready to come out and Flame On!
